I don’t know if I’m alone on this, but I liked Christina Aguilera’s music best when she first came out. I wouldn’t necessarily say her first CD–at least her first CD that produced hits–is her best. I do like her “Stripped” CD. After that…she kind of lost me. Anyway, I think those of us who are pop fans–or, at this point, who were pop fans…whatever the case may be–remember her biggest hits like “Beautiful” and “What A Girl Wants.” But for me, Christina has two absolutely incredible songs, and they happen to be the songs that are probably least known by her by pop era fans. One is “Reflection” from the “Mulan” movie soundtrack, also found on her “Christina Aguilera” CD (i.e. her “first” CD).
The other is this song I’m featuring here, “Too Beautiful For Words.” Now, this song was not on any US-released version of Christina’s full CDs. But, checking out Amazon, apparently it was released on a couple of her CD singles in the US. I am pretty sure I got my copy from an overseas version of Christina’s self-titled CD release, because in the late 90s and early 2000s I was very into getting bonus tracks released only on overseas CD copies from certain artists (i.e. Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Mandy Moore, the Corrs…as explained in one of the Celine Dion posts, I have multiple copies of several of her CDs for that reason. Will certainly be posting many of these).
Anyway, the point is…LOVE this song, and I think it’s absolutely one of Christina’s best. It probably should have replaced “I Turn To You” on the US CD release, because this is how a ballad is supposed to be done. I’m guessing the record label didn’t think it was teen-pop enough to compete with Britney and/or make her who she is today, and that’s true. But honestly, I wish she was still doing songs like this one and “Reflection.”Obviously, I’m passionate about this–just look how long this blog post is! It’s just irritating to me how many singers are out now who are, more or less, a waste of good vocals, musically (her, Lady Gaga, Pink, Leona Lewis to some degree, etc).
